| Fertility in women means being able to become pregnant and have a baby. This ability comes when a woman begins her menstrual period during puberty around age 13. A woman is usually able to continue having children until her period ends with menopause around age 51. ![]() Every woman is born with about 400,000 immature eggs (oocytes) in her ovaries. Inside her ovaries they are stored in follicles, which are tiny fluid-filled sacs. Once a woman enters her reproductive years, she begins having a menstrual cycle each month. During each cycle, the ovary releases one egg, or less commonly more than one egg, which may join with male sperm and result in pregnancy. Normally, when intercourse occurs, millions of sperm are deposited into the vagina. Only a few hundred sperm will even get close to the egg, however, because their numbers decline during the travel through the cervix and uterus, and up to the fallopian tube. Once sperm is close to the egg, it must be able to penetrate and fertilize the egg. Sperm can survive for two to three days in a woman's body, however, a woman's fertile window, or the length of time a woman's egg can be fertlized by a man's sperm is only 12 to 24 hours. With that being said... there are several factors that can have an effect on female fertility. You may have cause to be concerned if: You have not
been on any kind of birth control and have been unsuccessful in trying to conceive for more than one year. You have been on the birth control
injection Depo Provera before and have been unsuccessful
in trying to conceive for more than a year and a half since your last
injection. You have taken the"pill"and
stopped, and have been unsuccessful in trying to conceive for more than
one year. Obviously, a woman is infertile if she is not ovulating. Ovulation is when the ovaries discharge eggs. A Woman MUST ovulate in order to become pregnant! There are also several ways that a woman can tell if (and WHEN) she is ovulating! In order to understand infertility
and its causes, and also the role that modern infertility treatment
plays in assisting conception, you should take a look at the natural
process. Those processes would be a woman's ovulatory cycle and the
production of sperm in a man and there are hormones that play a major
role in these processes.
The gonadotropins are a hormone that primarily affect the ovaries and the testes. The gonadotropins regulate the hormone-secreting functions and the development of these organs and contribute to sperm production in males and contribute to the maturing of eggs, or oocytes, in females. There are three gonadotropins that
are essential to reproduction.
Human Follicle Stimulating Hormone (hFSH) Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) and Human Luteinizing Hormon (hLH) FSH and LH are secreted by the
pituitary gland which is located beneath the brain. Their secretion is,
in fact, controlled by another hormone, the gonadotropin-releasing
hormone (GnRH) produced by the hypothalamus. hCG is produced by the
placenta following a successful implantation, and plays a role in
sustaining and maintaining pregnancy.
